How soccer fans' jerseys became mobile wallets

When football fans come to matches in Mexico, they have to watch out for people who have a different goal in mind: pickpockets. In fact, it's such a problem that fans come with a minimum of valuables to avoid theft. But if you haven't got a wallet or a phone, how do you pay for a beer during the match? The brewer modelo came up with an intriguing  solution:  transforming the team jerseys worn by fans into digital wallets. It works with using NFC (near-field communication) technology. All fans have to do is go to any store in the Modelo group to get an NFC tag placed under their jersey's team badge. They create and credit an account on the site and - hey presto! - the jersey becomes a way of paying for a Corona beer at the stadim. Fans loved it and the innovation has so far been awarded at the Cannes Lions, LIA and Clio Sports
