философия There are a lot of unseen heroes in the movie biz. None are more famous than Chad Jackson, a back of the head extra who’s famed for his awe-inspiring expressions and career defining head nods. This film follows this movie maverick as he talks about his craft and takes us through some of his greatest silver screen achievements to date.
Результат We open on a WW1 soldier running through a misty forest. Distant gunfire and screaming can be heard. He checks a scrawled map in his hand and stumbles onward. Tension builds as he approaches a pit. His breath hangs in the air as a dramatic score begins to build. As he reaches the pit, and gasps - we reveal that it’s full of bodies. Suddenly the scene freezes, in contrast to the visual, an upbeat light–hearted voice comes in: Chad: That’s me, there. Rather than pointing to the lead actor an arrow appears pointing at the face down corpse in the pit. Chad: I do a lot of corpse work. We cut to an interview set up. Chad: I’m Chad Jackson and I'm a back of the head actor. TITLE: Chad Jackson, Back of the Head Actor Chad: What is Back of the Head? Chad: It’s a very complex performance style. We don’t have the usual cheats of “facial expression” or “words” to fall back on. We see him leafing through black and white actor head shots of the back of his head. He points to his favourite (it’s identical to all the others). Chad: In many ways it’s the essence of acting. We cut to another movie scene, an archive clip from Chad's career: an emotional sports drama from the early 90s. We see a man sat in his wheelchair in front of a boxing ring. He looks at some boxing gloves in his hands. We hear an emotional piece of music as a woman walks in. She walks over to the man and puts a hand on his shoulder. The man in the wheelchair moves his head ever so slightly. Chad: Oh Boy this one here… Well you know a lot of front-facing actors can’t get the same emotion into the back of their head, and that’s when they get me in for moments like… Cut back to interview but with him watching the film on a TV next to him. Chad gestures to the TV screen. We cut back to full screen on the movie. The camera does a big push in on his head doing a slight nod Chad: That! Wow. Still gives me goose-bumps when I watch it. The boxer throws his boxing gloves on the ring in frustration. Cut back to interview – The camera is close in on Chad’s head as he demonstrates different emotions through the back of his head. His movement doesn’t change. Chad: Ok, happy. Ok and now sad. Can you see, it’s very subtle. We cut to see Chad by an enlarged framed front cover of a Back Of Head Industry magazine. Headline: Chad Jackson – Backward Facing, Forward Thinking. Chad: Front cover Chad: I guess I first realised I had a talent when I was 8 years old. We see some ‘proud dad’ home footage of Chad in a school play with his back to the audience. Cut back to interview. Chad: Half way through the first act, I turned my back on the audience. I just stayed there. I mean I was running on pure instinct. You know since then I’ve never looked back, except for work purposes of course. We cut back to the WW2 movie from the start. Our lead hero talking to troops off camera, Chad dead in background. Hero: Tonight we are brothers Director: And, CUT. Chad’s interview VO continues: In this job you have to be a perfectionist A clapperboard and boom come into shot. Director: Well done everybody, that was great Chad: Erm excuse me… (Chad VO off camera: One misplaced hair can kill the whole scene.) Chad in scene: …. can we do that again? I just want to try something new (as he adjusts his hair) Director: Right, can we re-set one more time for Chad please guys. Hero: Are you serious?! We cut back to Chad’s house and see him opening the door to his wig wardrobe. Close ups of characters for wigs on the labels. One is called ‘Shocked Bystander’, another says ‘Outraged Reporter in Crowd’ and another says, ‘Prostitute Looking Out To Sea.’ We hear Chad’s voice over the top Chad: I mean can you imagine a movie where everyone faces forward? Cut to final scene of Chad being interviewed (could be watching TV or standard interview shot) Chad: Yeah pfff, that would be ridiculous. Cut to ‘moving portrait’ end frame. Chad stands on set with his back to the camera. Crew and extras are visible in the background. He removes his helmet and carefully adjusts his hair. TITLE: This film is dedicated to the unseen heroes of cinema Pearl & Dean: For film lovers everywhere Cut to black. The next trailer starts. It’s a gritty heist film – think Bourne. A helicopter hovers overhead. An action hero man avoids thugs as he leaps and runs down stairs. We intercut this with quick shots of with cash being strapped to his body and him staring at his reflection in a mirror psyching himself up. We end with him leaping into the back seat of a car. The camera whips to the back of the driver’s head. The trailer suddenly pauses. We cut back to interview. Chad: Oh, there I am again. I was acting and driving. It’s intense.
