Udayan cut his teeth directing a number of prestigous dramas for BBC TV, working with Britain's top writers.
Simon Gray penned some of his early features including They Never Slept, starring Edward Fox; Femme Fatale, with Simon Callow and Donald Pleasence; and Running Late, starring Peter Bowles which won a Golden Gate Award for Best TV Feature at the San Francisco International Film Festival. He won a second Golden Gate Award and BAFTA nomination for 102 Boulevard Haussmann, starring Alan Bates and scripted by Alan Bennett.
Alan also wrote Talking Heads – Playing Sandwiches which landed Udayan a second BAFTA nomination. His next movie Brothers in Trouble won the Golden Alexander Award for best feature. The hugely acclaimed My Son the Fanatic was selected for Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival and won the best feature award at the Potsdam Film Festival.
Gabriel & Me, starring Billy Connolly, was followed by a documentary, According To Beryl featuring Dame Beryl Bainbridge.
Starring Matthew Modine and Richard Griffiths OPA! premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. The Yellow Handkerchief, stars William Hurt, Kristen Stewart and Eddie Redmayne and was his US debut and opened at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim.
Udayan’s latest project was to direct the key episodes of The Tunnel for Sky Atlantic and Canal Plus - the Anglo French adaptation of the Danish/Swedish serial The Bridge.
Whenever he can Udayan enjoys the freedom and intensity of directing commercials and brings a wealth of ideas and energy to every production. He has filmed with major global agencies including DDB, JWT, McCanns and Ogilvy.
When not actively involved in production, Udayan teaches directing at several film schools including The National Film & Television School, The London Film School and many around Europe.
